MANILA, Philippines – Alvin Pasaol's 49-point explosion for University of the East (UE) on Wednesday was no doubt an impressive effort. It represented what is almost certainly the highest scoring performance in the UAAP since 1979.

Jeff Napa of National University was the last to breach the 40-point mark, firing 43 points in 2002. University of the Philippines' Paolo Mendoza, meanwhile, scored 48 points in 1999.

In 1984, UE's Allan Caidic and University of Santo Tomas' (UST) Pido Jarencio engaged in an absolute shootout during the Finals. The "Triggerman" scored 46 points, while the "Fireman" had 48 in Game 3, with UE coming out on top, 112-99, to win the Season 47 crown.

One will have to go all the way back to 1979 to find the last time that a UAAP player breached the 50-point mark. That man is Ed Cordero, another legend from UST who is now an assistant coach for Mapua University in the NCAA.

UAAP and NCAA statistician Pong Ducanes had the chance to catch up with Cordero in the sidelines of the Mapua-University of Perpetual Help game on Thursday, and the coach regaled him with the tale of his explosive effort.

Cordero even showed "evidence" of his career performance, which came against the Adamson Falcons. Playing for the "Glowing Goldies," Cordero scored 54 points in a 95-89 win that hiked UST's record to 2-1 at the time.

The game, held at the Loyola Center – now the Blue Eagle Gym – was a showcase for the 6-foot-4 Cordero.

"The day belonged to Cordero," according to the write-up. "Cordero routed all the guards assigned to him and shot 30 of his 54 points in the second half."

The Glowing Goldies went on to make the Finals of the UAAP that year, where they lost to Far Eastern University.
