Woman Grand Master Janelle Mae Frayna. Batumi Olympiad

The Philippine women's team, led by Woman Grand Master (WGM) Janelle Mae Frayna, suffered a setback against Georgia in the 43rd World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia on Monday night.

The Pinay chess players absorbed a 1-3 beating at the hands of Georgia’s second team a day after upsetting 15th-seed Spain.

Frayna and Woman International Master (WIM) Marie Antoinette San Diego halved the point with IM Salome Melia and EIM Sofia Gvetadze on boards one and three, respectively.

WIMs Shania Mae Mendoza and Bernadette Galas lost to WGMs Inga Charkhalashvili and Miranda Mikadze on boards two and four, respectively.

The defeat sent the Philippines from being tied at 13th to a 20-country pack at 24th with nine points.

Meanwhile, the Philippine men’s team brought down a feisty Albania side, 2.5-1.5, to crawl back into the thick of things after seven rounds.

Grandmaster Julio Catalino Sadorra and International Master (IM) Haridas Pascua bested IMs Dritan Mehmeti and Ilir Seitaj on boards one and four, respectively.

IM Jan Emmanuel Garcia then forced a draw with FIDE Maser Franc Ashiku on board three, which led to the Filipinos' escape win.

The team, bankrolled by the Philippine Sports Commission and backed by National Chess Federation of the Philippines president Butch Pichay, moved within the top 60 with eight points after lurking outside the top 100 two rounds before.
