FEU's Ino Comboy puts up a shot against La Salle. UAAP

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) -- Far Eastern University leaned on a superb performance from Pat Tchuente and clutch shots from Ino Comboy to overpower De La Salle University, 66-55, and return to the win column in the UAAP Season 82 men's basketball tournament on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

After a blowout loss to defending champion Ateneo last Saturday, the Tamaraws got back on track and improved their record to 2-2.

"I'm proud of the way we played today, coming off that loss to Ateneo," said FEU head coach Olsen Racela, whose wards were routed by the Blue Eagles, 63-46, last Saturday.

"I'm just happy with the way we responded today," he added.

Tchuente had his best game of the season so far, putting up 19 points on 9-of-11 shooting along with 11 rebounds and 2 blocks. Comboy finished with 11 points, including the dagger three-pointer with just over two minutes left that took the wind out of La Salle's sails.

The Tamaraws were in control most of the way and led by 11 points, 56-45, with under 8 minutes to go after a Tchuente bucket.

The Green Archers trimmed the lead to six points, 59-53, with four minutes to go thanks to a Jamie Malonzo three-pointer, but it turned out to be their final field goal of the contest.

FEU's defense would smother them the rest of the way, and La Salle did itself no favors with rushed shots and turnovers. On the other end, Comboy drilled a huge three-pointer with 2:24 to go that made it a nine-point game, 62-53, then added another lay-up that restored an 11-point lead with 1:35 left.

La Salle last got on the board after two free throws by Keys Meeker inside the final minute, but Royce Alforque answered back with a lay-up to peg the final score.

The Green Archers, who were coming off a shock defeat to University of the East, suffered a second straight loss to drop to 1-3.

Malonzo scored 20 points, but shot only 8 of 24 from the field. He did add 15 rebounds, 3 assists, and a steal, but Andrei Caracut was the only other La Salle player in double-digits with 10 points.

The Green Archers, as a team, shot only 31.43% from the field, and only 4-of-13 from the free throw line.

FEU's bench also shone, outscoring La Salle's reserves 22-12.

The scores:

FEU 66 -- Tchuente 19, Comboy 11, Bienes 9, Eboña 8, Alforque 7, Gonzales 5, Tuffin 4, Torres 3, Cani 0, Nunag 0, Stockton 0.

DLSU 55 - Malonzo 20, Caracut 10, Baltazar 6, Serrano 6, Melecio 5, Bates 2, Lojera 2, Meeker 2, Pado 2, Manuel 0.

Quarterscores: 19-14, 36-24, 49-43, 66-55.
