MANILA, Philippines – Comebacking University of Santo Toma (UST) guard Renzo Subido has won UAAP Player of the Week honors after he led the Growling Tigers to an upset victory over Far Eastern University (FEU) last Wednesday.
The 22-year-old guard, who is making a return to the UST men's basketball team after a one-year layoff, fired 18 points on top of two rebounds and an assist in the Tigers' 76-74 shocker over the Tamaraws.
It was their first win of the UAAP Season 81 men's basketball tournament.
His performance against FEU served as a bounce-back moment for Subido, who endured a poor shooting day during UST's season-opener against National University.
Against the Bulldogs, the veteran guard made only five of 24 attempts, including only two of ten shots from beyond the arc.
"'Yung last game na 'yun, we were able to get or shots pero hindi lang pumapasok," the 5-foot-9 guard said. "Pero alam namin na magiging maayos pa ang laro namin and we just have to trust each other at magtiwala sa sistema."
Subido edged Ateneo de Manila University's Thirdy Ravena, University of the Philippines' Juan Gomez de Liano, and FEU's Prince Orizu for the weekly award.
