MANILA, Philippines – Far Eastern University (FEU) recovered from its loss in the opening weekend by downing University of the East (UE), 90-83, for their first victory of the UAAP Season 80 men's basketball tournament on Wednesday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Prince Orizu dominated the Red Warriors' smaller frontline en route to a 15-point, 16-rebound performance, while Ron Dennison had another strong game with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals.

Though they settled for a seven-point win, the Tamaraws were in control throughout the game, leading nearly wire-to-wire despite struggling at times against the Red Warriors' full-court press. FEU led by as much as 19 points, 30-11, at the 9:36 mark of the second quarter, thanks to Barkley Eboña's lay-up.

"It always gives you satisfaction when you win. It's our first of the season and my first one as the coach," said FEU coach Olsen Racela after their victory. "Pero malayo pa kami sa kung saan namin gusto pumunta."

The Red Warriors managed to stay within striking distance, however, thanks to the aggressiveness of Alvin Pasaol and Clark Derige. It was a triple by Derige that made it an eight-point game, 28-36, with 3:55 left in the second quarter.

FEU responded with Arvin Tolentino and RJ Ramirez waxing hot from beyond the arc. Ramirez completed a four-point play, while Tolentino knocked down back-to-back triples to put the Tamaraws in control anew, 46-28, with 2:47 left.

UE last threatened with 4:40 left, when Alvin Pasaol split his charities to make it an eight-point game, 74-82. That was when Dennison took over for the Tamaraws, as he scored their next six points, including a breakaway lay-up with 2:18 left, for an 88-76 advantage.

"Sabi lang ng mga coaches, be consistent lang sa laro ko," said Dennison, who had a career-high 21 points against De La Salle University in their first game of the season. "Kailangan ko i-lead 'yung team namin whether on defense or offense."

Eboña, Richard Escoto, and Tolentino all finished with 11 points for FEU, which shot 44.93% from the field and limited the Red Warriors to only 34.78% shooting.

It could have been a more comfortable victory for the Tamaraws had they been able to defend without fouling, however. Instead, they sent the Red Warriors to the line a whopping 43 times, with UE making 32 charities in the contest.

The Tamaraws also had a field day at the charity stripe, attempting 33 free throws and making 22.

Derige led UE with 22 points, while Pasaol had 13 points, six rebounds, and four assists before fouling out with 4:28 left in the game.

FEU improved to 1-1 with the victory, while UE sank to the bottom of the league standings at 0-2.
