Joe Silva has stepped down as the University of the East Red Warriors' head coach, an announcement made Tuesday, the eve of the team's first game of UAAP Season 82 men's basketball.

"Since management has decided to move in a different direction, I am resigning as head coach of UE," said Silva, who was hired last year out of the Ateneo de Manila High School program.

With the Blue Eaglets, he won 2 UAAP juniors titles, credentials he banked on when he agreed to move to Recto, replace Derek Pumaren, and call the shots for a seniors' team that has only known disappointment on the hard court.

Silva's Red Warriors finished with a 1-13 record.

"I will continue to work on my craft and learning and improving so I will be better in what I do," he said.

According to an article posted on ABS-CBN Sports, Silva's staff, composed of former UE players Paul Artadi and Rob Labagala, will stay.

Point guard Philip Manalang is returning to a squad that has a bunch of new faces, including Alex Diakhite, a 6-foot-9 Senegalese center; athletic wing Rey Suerte, a 3-time champion and 2-time MVP for University of the Visayas in the CESAFI; Jed Mendoza, a high-scoring guard from Jose Rizal University; and 6-foot-4 wing Richie Rodger, a Filipino raised in New Zealand.
