JAKARTA—Less than 24 hours after a gutsy performance against Kazakhstan, the Philippine women’s volleyball team returns to the court with hopes of ending its 2018 Asian Games campaign on a winning note.

Opening serve is at 10 a.m. at GOR Bulungan here (11 a.m., Manila time).

The Filipinas put on an inspired effort but just fell short against the Kazakhs, who took a 25-11, 22-25, 25-15, 19-25, 16-14 triumph on Friday afternoon at the Indoor Volleyball Arena in the Gelora Bung Karno sports complex.

That put them in a battle for seventh place against host Indonesia, which bowed in four sets to Vietnam, 27-29, 25-18, 22-25, 22-25, despite a 30-point output from Aprilia Manganang.

Their strong showing against Kazakhstan gives the Filipinas reason for optimism ahead of their final assignment in these Games.

“I think naka-ilang games na naman kami since we faced Indonesia, so kahit kaunting games lang 'yun, ang dami pa ring experience namin na nakuha. Nakapag-jell kami more as a team, nakapag-warm-up, nakapag-loosen up na kami, na nakita naman sa game today,” said Jia Morado, who was credited with 26 excellent sets against Kazakhstan.

“So hopefully (Saturday), we can give Indonesia a good fight, and at the same time, hopefully get the win also. Kasi malaking bagay talaga para sa Pilipinas na maipanalo namin bukas,” she added.

Indonesia defeated the Philippines, 25-20, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22, Saturday, with Manganang scoring 28 points.

The powerful open hitter will surely be the focus of the Philippines defense in the rematch.

“Alam naman natin na nag-fourth set ‘yung laro natin doon,” noted Mylene Paat, who had 14 points against Kazakhstan. “Siguro, more focus lang, tsaka mas lalaong ma-challenge kami sa mga darating na pagsubok.”
