JAKARTA -- The Philippines broke into the medal table in the 2018 Asian Games on Sunday, courtesy of the men’s and women’s teams in poomsae.

Both squads were assured of bronze medals after beating their respective opponents in the quarterfinals.

The women’s team, composed of Janna Oliva, Juvenile Crisostomo and Rinna Babanto, overcame a shaky start to defeat hosts Indonesia, 8.070 to 8.040.

They had trailed after the first form, 8.180-8.240, but came through in the second to edge Indonesia by the slimmest of margins.

“Nung nag-flash po 'yung score, parang hindi pa po namin na-compute agad, kung kami po ba 'yung panalo or sila po,” said Crisostomo, who studies at Far Eastern University.

“Gusto ko pong umiyak sa court mismo, kasi 'di talaga namin in-expect,” Oliva said of her reaction to the scores.

“Kasi sa first form po, sila 'yung lamang. Then our coach just reminded us na may time pa bumawi for the next form, then 'yun, we gave our all, and lumamang kami ng super kaunti sa kanila for the second form.”

The women’s team would go on to lose to Korea, 8.020 to 7.110, in the semifinals.

Meanwhile, the men’s team secured bronze after beating Iran, 8.330 to 8.100, in their own quarterfinals.

“Sobrang saya namin, sobrang nakaka-uplift ng feeling kasi ayun nga, kami ang first medal, and ang pinagdaanan namin, mga training na pinagdaanan namin,” said Jeordan Dominguez, a graduate of University of Baguio.

Dominguez teamed up with Rodolfo Reyes Jr. and Dustin Jacob Mella to make up the men’s poomsae squad.

“It was a little bit of pressure, so kailangan mag-(set) kami ng standard na ito po ‘yung kaya ng poomsae team,” said Reyes, a graduate of University of Santo Tomas who also made the quarterfinals in the men’s individual event.

The men’s team however bowed to China, 8.180 to 7.830, in the semifinals.

The teams were warmly congratulated by chef-de-mission Richard Gomez, who watched their semis performances at the Plenary Hall in the Jakarta Convention Center.
