MANILA, Philippines – Star guard RR Garcia earned Player of the Week honors after playing his best game in a Hotshots jersey on Sunday and leading his new team to a 105-102 overtime victory over the GlobalPort Batang Pier.

He lost his personal scoring duel with former Far Eastern University teammate Terrence Romeo, who scored 27 points, but it was Garcia's team who wound up with the victory.

Garcia, who was acquired in a trade prior to the conference, had 26 points on 11-of-13 shooting in the hard-fought victory, 10 of which came in the fourth quarter and overtime.

He scored the game-tying basket in regulation, helped force Romeo into a miss in the final possession of the fourth, then scored eight points in overtime including the go-ahead free throws.

The 26-year-old Garcia, who is in his third PBA team in four years in the league, earned praise from coach Jason Webb, who said that the former UAAP MVP proved his worth in Sunday's game.

"We gave up a lot to get (Garcia), and he played like the three players that we traded away combined," he said.

For Star import Marqus Blakely, Garcia's performance was all the more impressive because he took up the challenge of defending the explosive Romeo.

"Things that don't show up is defensively. He was guarding Terrence Romeo and (Stanley) Pringle," Blakely said of Garcia. "To play on both ends is huge, and that's what we need from a point guard."

The challenge for Garcia now is to play at a high level consistently, according to Star veteran Marc Pingris.

"Kailangan namin ng isang RR Garcia sa team namin. May experience siya at beterano na siya. Hopefully, tuloy-tuloy na 'yung laro niyang ganyan," he said.

Garcia himself says he was only fulfilling the role given to him by Webb, who inserted him into the starting line-up ahead of the game.

"Talagang ginampanan ko 'yung role ko. Nagulat nga ako na ako 'yung nag-start eh," he admitted. "Binigay ko 'yung best ko na ipapakita sa team na kaya ko bantayan si Terrence."

Garcia bested Blackwater's JP Erram, Rain or Shine's Gabe Norwood, and Alaska's Chris Banchero for the weekly award.
