MANILA - Tim Cone has undoubtedly left his mark in the history of Philippine sports, as the winningest head coach in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) and the owner of 22 championships -- including two Grand Slams.

But did he ever think of trying his luck in basketball leagues abroad?

"Actually, never," Cone said, during a recent appearance on the "Coaches Unfiltered" podcast presented by SMART. "I never really thought about it."

It was not just because of a lack of opportunity. Cone explained that he has not really wanted to coach anywhere else rather than the Philippines, where he grew up before moving back to the United States for college.

"I never applied anywhere else," said Cone, who broke into the Philippine coaching scene with Alaska in 1989. "I never looked to coach anywhere else."

"I love the PBA," he stressed.

Nonetheless, there is a scenario that would have prompted Cone to think twice about his stance.

"If Phil Jackson would call me and say, 'Come coach the (New York) Knicks. Come be an assistant to the Knicks.' It's something that from a personal stand, or a personal growth standpoint, I'd have to think about it," he admitted.

Jackson, who utilized the triangle offense to great effect during his coaching career, was the president of the Knicks from 2014 to 2017.

"No one's ever called me," Cone said. "So there's no reason for me to go anywhere."
