Gilas boys drub China to break dry spell at FIBA U19 World Cup

(UPDATE) Dave Ildefonso scored 12 of his 21 points in the breakaway third quarter, as the Philippines boys' national basketball team beat China 86-72 in the classification stage of the FIBA U19 World Cup in Greece on Saturday.

Gilas Youth, which lost 5 consecutive prior to its win against its long-time continental rival, next faces New Zealand for the right to claim 13th place.

The Philippines-New Zealand game is on Sunday, July 7.

After leading 41-37 at halftime at Heraklion University Hall, the Philippines, ranked 30th, outscored No. 14 China 31-20 in the third to take control of the game.

By also assisting on 9 points, Ildefonso was responsible for 21 of Gilas' total points in the quarter.

Ildefonso tallied a team-high 4 3-pointers for the Filipinos, who were sharp from behind the arc, making 13-of-31 attempts (41.9%).

Carl Vincent Tamayo chipped in 20 points, as Gilas survived a foul-plagued night for star center Kai Sotto.

Sotto finished with 5 points before fouling out midway through the fourth quarter.
