MANILA, Philippines – Gilas Pilipinas Youth center AJ Edu has been diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee, which will keep him out of the rest of the 2019 FIBA Under-19 World Cup.

Edu suffered the injury two minutes into Gilas Youth's first game against Greece. He had to be helped off the court by his teammates, and did not return. Greece eventually claimed an 85-69 triumph despite the best efforts of the young Filipinos.

According to George Yorobe, the physical therapist of the Gilas Pilipinas Youth, Edu was rushed to the nearest diagnostics hospital in Heraklion, Greece for an MRI following the injury.

Initial findings showed that Edu suffered an ACL and meniscal tear on his right knee, with a hairline fracture on his right femur bone as well.

The official results will be released on Monday.

Yorobe said they have also requested the orthopedic doctor at FIBA to check on Edu.

In a statement, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio expressed his support to Edu.

"I sent him a message that the SBP is committed to help him get through this ordeal and we are behind him all the way," said Panlilio. "We will help him with whatever he needs."

"As I said to you, this (national team) is a journey together. We will be with you. Walang iwanan (no one is left behind). Just focus on recovery now," the SBP boss said in a message to the 19-year-old Edu.

Edu had 3 rebounds and a block before suffering the injury against Greece.
