GLENDALE, California - Friends, family, fans and some Philippine basketball greats celebrated the West Coast book launch of the maestro of Philippine basketball, Virgilio “Baby” Dalupan.

“It means the world because our father, we also grew up knowing very much sharing him as a father with all his boys, to the men he mentored throughout the decades, to see and know personally and witness what he meant to them is very important,” said coach Virgilio “Baby” Dalupan’s daughter, Cecilia Dalupan.

The biography, which was put together by the family, colleagues, and players of Coach Baby Dalupan, was first launched in the Philippines last year shortly before he passed away at 92 years old.

The book chronicles the life of Coach Baby on and off the court, as well as the history of the Philippines spanning some 50 years.

“Reading the book, you will see really memorable descriptions of what the Philippines was living through in its basketball culture and also the changes of what was going on in the county,” said John Maistro, president of the US-Philippine Society.

With over half a century dedicated to the game at the collegiate, national, and professional ranks, many stateside players, including Hall of Famer Ricardo Brown, were on hand to walk down memory lane.

“This is really something special. This is history. A lot of people think they know Coach Baby but when you look around the room they see all the accomplishments. It’s pretty remarkable,” said Brown.

Brown, who won 5 championships under Coach Baby, delivered a keynote as other former players showered the family with a gift and some songs.

Proceeds of the book goes to a pair of schools where the legendary coach also made an impact.

“It is really most importantly to raise funds for academic and athletic scholarships for student athletes at Ateneo de Manila University and University of the East--teams that meant the most to our father and teams that he coached to championships,” said his daughter.

The book is available through eBay for charity and Paypal for giving sites.
