San Miguel Beer withstood a furious rally by Star in the fourth quarter to hack out a 109-102 victory on Friday and nab the first finals berth in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup.

Led by Alex Cabagnot and Chris Ross, the Beermen punctuated their best-of-5 semifinal series in Game 4, 3-1.

Cabagnot had 26 points, while Ross added 24 and 10 assists. June Mar Fajardo and Charles Rhodes chipped in 22 and 21 points, respectively, for the Beermen.

“We're back in the finals and we're so happy with these hard-working players because pinakita nila ang kanilang championship caliber,” said San Miguel coach Leo Austria.

Star was able to claw back from 14 points down and came within just 3 points behind Ricardo Ratliffe.

But the Hotshots' locals weren’t able to step up during crunch time, allowing the Beermen to secure a 5th finals appearance in 8 conferences.

Austria gave props to Star coach Chito Victolero for giving San Miguel a highly competitive series.

“They will force to bring out the best in you. I have to give credit to the coaching staff of Star, talagang piniga nila kami. Talagang nagkaroon ng chessmatch,” he said.

Ratliffe ended up with 36 points and 17 rebounds for Star.

The Beermen now await the winner of the Barangay Ginebra-TNT tussle.

The scores:

SMB 109 – Cabagnot 26, Ross 24, Fajardo 22, Rhodes 21, Lassiter 8, Santos 4, Heruela 3, Espinas 1, Tubid 0
