SAN JACINTO, California – A pair of Filipino fighters put on impressive performances at the Soboba Casino on Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila).

Marlon Tapales and Jhack Tepora, who both lost their world titles on the scales, headlined the Premier Boxing Champions fight card against a pair of Latino opponents.

Tapales, a former WBO bantamweight champion, kicked off the telecast against Mexico's Robert Castaneda. He immediately scored a knockdown in the first round, and did more damage with his lethal left hand in the third.

The referee put a stop to the contest, giving Tapales his seventh straight win via stoppage. His record improved to 33 wins and two losses.

"Medyo na-sense ko na medyo nasasaktan na ang kalaban ko," said Tapales, who was thrilled to gain a quick win.

Meanwhile, Tepora returned from a ten-month layoff by defeating Jose Luis Gallegos via decision.

Tepora had lost his interim WBA featherweight title by failing to make the weight for a showdown against Hugo Ruiz, in a bout that was supposed to be on the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Adrien Broner card earlier this year.

All three judges saw the bout in Tepora's favor, with scores of 99-91 across the board. The Cebuano now has a 23-0 win-loss record.

"Ang ginawa ko, puntos-puntos lang, gamit ng utak," Tepora said of his game plan.

For the two young fighters, their road to redemption goes through another Filipino who is also a former world champion.

For the past year, former light-flyweight champion Rodel Mayol has taken several Filipino fighters under his wing, including Tepora and Tapales.

"Ipakita lang sa kanila na kayang-kaya mag-lose ng weight, at saka talagang kailangan nila mag-follow sa trainers," said Mayol.

Tepora will now continue his training in the United States, while Tapales will look at his next options.

As for Mayol, who also coached Romero Duno to a victory earlier this month, he is off to Japan to help Aston Palicte prepare for a world title shot against Kazuto Ioka.
