MANILA, Philippines -- Riding a roller-coaster to begin the 2017 Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference, the Power Smashers are hoping they have finally found the form to push them upward in the standings.

With Jovielyn Prado and Regine Arocha getting the better of Alyssa Valdez down the stretch, the Power Smashers earned a hardfought victory versus Creamline, 25-23, 21-25, 25-17, 20-25, and 15-13, at the Filoil Flying V Centre, Tuesday.

Losers in their last two assignments, Nes Pamilar said his wards did nothing but double their effort to barge back into the win column. “Siyempre, nawawala-wala yung kumpyansa kaya sinabi ko sa kanila, ‘Tiwala lang.’ Ni-practice lang namin yung mga dahilan bakit kami natalo,” he said.

That was no more evident than in Prado who was unable to come close to her 31-point outburst the last time around, but still did more than enough with 16 points.

It was the NCAA Finals MVP who showed the way in the fifth and final set, firing four points as the Power Smashers battled back from a 2-6 deficit early on.

Arocha backed up Prado and the two of them had all the answers for whatever Valdez brought to the table.

The two teams were going at it in the first two sets until the Power Smashers seemed to be finally taking control in the third set, leading by as much as 10 and eventually ending it up by eight.

The Cool Smashers going away that easy, however, and came back to life in the fourth set.

In the end, it was again Valdez who kept her team alive, pulling them to within 13-14 in the payoff period.

Katherine Villegas put the finishing touches for the Power Smashers’ rise to 2-2, however, and rejected Valdez’ bid from the back row.

Arocha wound up with 18 points while Villegas had 12 points to her name to help the Power Smashers get the tough five-setter. Just last Saturday, they were at the wrong end of a five set defeat, 31-29, 26-24, 19-25, 23-25, 19-21, at the hands of Perlas.

This is the Pamilar-led squad’s first win since upsetting powerhouse Pocari Sweat in their conference-opener.

Of course, Valdez topped the scoring column for Creamline with 27 points. With the loss, however, they fail to get a winning streak going and drop to 1-2.
