MANILA, Philippines -- UAAP volleyball fans only saw them for one game, but Aby Maraño has been watching De La Salle University's highly-touted rookie class for a couple of years already.

The Lady Spikers made their UAAP debut on March 7, when they defeated archrivals and defending champions Ateneo de Manila University in four sets, 25-17, 17-25, 25-17, 25-15.

Senior spiker Tin Tiamzon shone in that game, putting up 17 points and 12 digs. Sophomore Jolina dela Cruz had 13 points and 10 receptions in a solid outing.

It was the performance of their rookies that had La Salle fans most excited, however. Thea Gagate, their 6-foot-2 middle blocker, had five kill blocks on her way to 10 points, while Leila Cruz added 9 markers. Baby Jyne Soreno came off the bench to score 8 points.

She has seen how Gagate, Cruz, and the other La Salle rookies developed since they were in senior high school, and so she knew what they had to offer.

As impressive as their debut performances were, Maraño expects that Gagate, Cruz, and company will only improve as the years go by.

This was one reason that she was so disappointed that UAAP Season 82 was terminated -- the national team captain had hoped to see their rookies be tested repeatedly by the rest of the UAAP teams.
