MANILA, Philippines – Not only is Ateneo de Manila University losing its head coach, it is also losing its top scorer, Jhoana Maraguinot, after UAAP Season 80.

Maraguinot confirmed on Saturday following their Final 4 loss to Far Eastern University that she will forego her final season of eligibility.

"Yeah I'm graduating," said Maraguinot, who had 11 points in Ateneo's 20-25, 21-25, 25-14, 19-25 loss to the Lady Tamaraws.

"I have one more (season of eligibility), but I think I'm done," she added.

Maraguinot averaged 14.5 points per game in Season 80, and was instrumental in Ateneo's run to the Final 4 where they were the No. 3 seed.

But she had a string of poor performances towards the end of the season, including a six-point clunker in a three-set loss to De La Salle University in their final elimination round game that killed their chances of competing for a twice-to-beat edge in the semifinals.

Against the Lady Tamaraws in the Final 4, she struggled for her 11 points, and was blocked by FEU setter Kyle Negrito in the final rally of the match.

"Siyempre, sobrang sayang kasi it was do-or-die for us and we died," said Maraguinot. "Kinulang kami, (but) lumaban pa rin naman kami."

"'Yung third set namin was grabe, 'yun 'yung mami-miss ko sa UAAP -- 'yung feeling na kita mo na lahat ng teammates mo lumalaban, nagtutulong-tulong. We fought 'til the end," she added.

Maraguinot played for Ateneo from Season 77 to Season 80, helping the Lady Eagles win the title in her first year with the team. Her breakout game came against La Salle in Season 77, when she scored 10 points against the Lady Spikers in their second round meeting to help Ateneo complete an elimination round sweep.

She played in the shadow of three-time MVP Alyssa Valdez in Season 78, but was the Lady Eagles top scoring option in her last two seasons in the team. However, she was unable to lead Ateneo to the same heights that Valdez did.

Still, Maraguinot says she has no regrets.

"Even though we fell short, alam ko naman na kilala kami ng mga tao as lumalaban hanggang dulo, hanggang kaya. 'Yun din namin 'yung naging development ko as a person," said Maraguinot.

"I admit na hindi rin naman ako ganito before maglaro, hindi ganito 'yung character. Pero noong hinandle kami Coach Tai (Bundit), tinuro niya sa amin 'yung Heartstrong. Tinuro niya na 'di ka pwede sumuko until tapos na," she added.

She is also optimistic that she is leaving the team in capable hands.

"Maybe it's not meant to be (this year)," she said. "I know na 'yung teammates ko, babawi next year."

Maraguinot has yet to sign with a club team and intends to take a brief break from the sport. However, she is also willing to try out for the women's national volleyball team after being included in the 34-woman master list by coach Ramil de Jesus.
