MANILA, Philippines -- (UPDATED) The UAAP on Tuesday decided to cancel all of the second semester sports in Season 82, putting an abrupt end to the league's events.

The decision came after the government decided to extend the Luzon-wide lockdown until April 30 in an effort to curb the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The UAAP already cancelled all of its high school events last March 14, and suspended the collegiate events in their traditional format. Its original plan was to pursue an "alternative format" should the government lift the lockdown by April 15.

The extension, however, prompted the UAAP to terminate its season, following the NCAA. The oldest collegiate league in the country decided to end its 95th season on March 19.

"The enhanced community quarantine having been extended, the conditions for the resumption of the UAAP Season 82 can no longer be met," UAAP president Em Fernandez and executive director Atty. Rebo Saguisag Jr. said in a memorandum.

"As such, it is now deemed cancelled."

Cancelled are the men's and women's volleyball tournaments, and the men's football tournament.

The women's football tournament, baseball, softball, athletics, lawn tennis, and 3x3 basketball had all yet to start.

"All other issues related thereto will be resolved at the proper time, as we continue to focus our time, energy, and resources in battling this crisis," they continued.

"Nevertheless, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you, our fans, partners, student-athletes, coaches, and all other members of the UAAP community."
