MANILA, Philippines -- The UAAP on Saturday announced that it is cancelling the rest of its high school events, after Malacañang released guidelines calling for stringent social distancing in light of the COVID-19 outbreak.

In a memorandum to the league, UAAP president Emmanuel Fernandez and executive director Atty. Rebo Saguisag noted that the guidelines ban mass gatherings -- including sporting events -- and extended the suspension of classes until April 14.

"The school calendar for high school of majority of the member-schools will have ended by then. As such, all high school events, whether pending or yet to commence, are deemed cancelled," the statement said.

This means that Adamson and University of Santo Tomas are now co-champions of the inaugural girls basketball tournament, after they each won a game in the best-of-3 finals.

As for the seniors division, "the regular formats of the different sporting events are likewise cancelled."

"If the government declares that it is safe to resume classes on April 15 and does not prohibit mass gatherings, the UAAP will work toward alternative formats of competition to begin no earlier than May 1, 2020," the league said.

Collegiate events that have either stopped or have yet to begin are: volleyball, football, athletics, tennis, baseball, softball, and 3x3 basketball.

"We will continue to coordinate with lead government agencies to determine protocols for the safety of everyone in or connected with the UAAP community."

As of Saturday afternoon, the Philippines has recorded eight deaths from COVID-19. The Department of Health also confirmed 34 new cases, raising the total to 98.

COVID-19 had wrecked the Philippines' sports calendar, suspending virtually all leagues including the UAAP, the NCAA, and the PBA.
