MANILA, Philippines – After keeping their Final 4 bid alive with a straight-sets victory over University of the East (UE), the Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws will need to go all in their last two games of the UAAP Season 79 elimination round.

FEU improved to 6-6 on Wednesday with a 25-14, 25-18, 27-25 victory over the Lady Warriors, but their record is still only good enough for sixth place in what has become a very tight race for the last two spots in the semifinals.

Remy Palma, the Lady Tamaraws' team captain, made it clear that she will give everything she has in the final stretch of the elimination round, and that she expects her teammates to do the same.

"Personally, for me, ayaw ko mag-end agad ang playing year ko. Last ko na ito eh," said Palma. "Kung dadaan man kami sa butas ng karayom, ayun na, ibigay na lahat, kailangan i-all out every game, lalo na sa last two remaining games."

[Personally, I don't want my last playing year to end just yet. We'll have to pass through the eye of the needle, so we have to give our best effort in the last two remaining games.]

Back-to-back losses to Ateneo de Manila University and University of Santo Tomas had dented FEU's Final 4 hopes, and even the usually upbeat Palma acknowledged that she felt "down" because of the untimely defeats.

"Parang, 'Ano ba 'yan, parang kulang pa rin ang ginagawa ko,'" she said. "Pero sabi ko, in-analyze ko, and may chance pa naman kami."

[I thought that what I was doing was not enough. But I analyzed the situation, and I saw that we still had a chance to make it to the Final 4.]

So the team captain exhorted her teammates to keep their heads up. "Sabi ko, 'Guys, huwag tayong mawalan ng pag-asa, kasi hindi naman natatapos dito 'yung season natin. May last three remaining games pa tayo'," Palma said.

"'Yun na lang ang pagtuunan natin kasi doon mas mate-test ang samahan natin kasi dito sa lahat ng games na natitira, sobrang crucial na, so kailangan yung samahan natin, intact pa rin talaga tayo'," she added. "At sabi ko, tulungan niyo ako. Sabi ko, tulungan niyo rin ako sa gusto ko ring mangyari ngayong taon."

[I told them: Guys, let's not lose home because our season is not yet over. We have three games left, and let's focus on that. That's where our bond will be tested, so we have to be intact. I told them to help me achieve what I want to do this season.]

With just four match days to go in the elimination round, only defending champion De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila University are assured of Final 4 seats. FEU is locked in a tight battle with UST, University of the Philippines, and National University for the last two spots.

The Lady Tamaraws are one game behind the other contenders, who are in a logjam for the third to fifth places with identical 7-5 win-loss records. Thus, they are in a must-win situation heading into their last two matches against NU and UP.

At the moment, the Lady Tamaraws are simply focused on their own schedule and their standing. Palma said it will be pointless for them to worry about the other Final 4 contenders, two of whom they still have to play.

"Basta tayo, kung ano ang meron sa harap natin, doon tayo mag-focus," said Palma. "Kailangan maibigay na lahat every game. All out na din talaga."
