MANILA, Philippines – The Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles bucked a second set meltdown and eventually overpowered University of the East (UE), 25-14, 18-25, 25-13, 25-18, for their third win in a row in the UAAP Season 80 women's volleyball tournament on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Lady Eagles hiked their record to 7-3, inching closer to a spot in the UAAP Season 80 Final 4. The Lady Warriors, meanwhile, lost for the second straight game, dropping to 2-8.

It was smooth sailing for the Lady Eagles outside of the second set, when their floor defense fell apart and they had no answer for the spikes of UE veteran Shaya Adorador.

But they recovered with a dominant performance in the third set, and carried that momentum all the way to the fourth to wrap up the victory in an hour and 44 minutes.

"I think the second set was because of our errors," said Ateneo veteran Kat Tolentino. "We weren't playing the way we should be playing. But it's good that we bounced back in the third and fourth set."

Tolentino was unstoppable for Ateneo, scoring 22 points on 16 kills and five blocks. Jhoana Maraguinot added 16 points, and skipper Maddie Madayag contributed 13 markers.

Ateneo unloaded 54 kills and had 13 blocks against the Lady Warriors. Fittingly, their last point came off a kill block when Bea de Leon soundly rejected Mean Mendrez.

Adorador finished with 21 points for the Lady Warriors, but she was far from efficient as she converted only 19 of a whopping 65 attempts. Mendrez was limited to 10 points after taking a starring role for UE in their previous contests.

Ace libero Kath Arado remained a bright spot for UE, with 30 digs and 16 excellent receptions.

However, with their 2-8 record, the Lady Warriors are on the brink of elimination from the Final 4 race.
