MANILA, Philippines – Far Eastern University (FEU) carved out a 2-1 triumph over De La Salle University on Sunday, propelling the Tamaraws to the top of the table after the first round of the UAAP Season 81 men's football tournament.

Nikki Canonigo produced the 83rd minute winner as the Tamaraws to end the first round undefeated with 15 points on four wins and three draws.

FEU quickly scored in the opening minute courtesy of Kim Minsu's strike before Alfonso Montelibano's fine play delivered the equalizer for La Salle in the 22nd minute.

Meanwhile, Ateneo de Manila University and defending champion University of the Philippines (UP) forced a three-way tie for second place – along with University of Santo Tomas (UST) – after beating separate foes.

Rupert Baña scored twice while Mark Nacional and Martin Ordoñez also entered the scoresheet as the Blue Eagles rout National University, 4-0.

King Miyagi's stoppage time strike powered the Fighting Maroons to a 2-1 win over University of the East.

A 62nd minute goal by Christian Lapas and a stoppage time strike by Miyagi finally gave UP the victory that has been elusive in the past two weeks.

Ateneo, UP, and UST are level with 10 points each.

However, the surging Blue Eagles are ahead of the Maroons and the Growling Tigers on goal difference, after scoring 13 goals in their last three wins.

The Green Archers remained at nine points with a match left in the first round and have dropped outside the top four range.

The Red Warriors and the Bulldogs stayed at seven and five points, respectively.

In the women's action at Circulo Verde Saturday, Kyra Dimaandal, Irish Navaja and Alisha Del Campo were on target as La Salle blanked UP, 3-0, to move up at seven points.

Hazel Lustan and Cecile Deita found the back of the net as UST surrendered an early goal before beating Ateneo, 2-1, to also improve at seven points.
