MANILA, Philippines – For the second consecutive season, the Red Lions and Red Cubs of San Beda College dominated the NCAA.

San Beda took the general championship in both the seniors and juniors divisions in the 92nd season of the NCAA, making it two years in a row that they have lorded over the oldest collegiate league in the Philippines.

The Red Lions finished with a total of 683 points in the seniors division, just 37 points ahead of their closest pursuer, De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (647 points).

Championships in men's basketball, men's and women's swimming, chess, men's football, women's soft tennis, men's taekwondo, and women's table tennis made it possible for San Beda to secure a second consecutive overall crown.

However, San Beda officials are as proud of their respectable finishes in other sports, especially in events where they are not generally considered as contenders.

"We invested in other sports, not just the events that we're strong at," said Jose Mari Lacson, San Beda's representative to the Management Committee. "We hope to keep on improving year after year."

"We're happy. It's a proud accomplishment for the whole San Beda community," he added.

Lacson was especially delighted with San Beda's Final 4 appearance in the women's volleyball tournament, and their runner-up finish in women's beach volleyball.

Even in track and field, where they generally lag behind other schools, San Beda managed to come in at seventh place.

"In track and field, our expectation is just to finish seventh or eighth, because we have several injured players," said Lacson. "Hopefully, we could improve."

Arellano University finished a far third in the seniors division, with 590 total points. Lyceum of the Philippines University (444.5 points) finished fourth, followed by University of Perpetual Help (384.5), Colegio de San Juan de Letran (367), Mapua Institute of Technology (301.5), San Sebastian College (300), Emilio Aguinaldo College (299), and Jose Rizal University (172.5).

It was San Beda's second straight general championship, and fifth overall, in the seniors division.

Their triumph in the juniors division was a nail-biter, as San Beda finished with 405 points, while Arellano was just 7.5 points behind with 397.5 points.

A second place finish in the track-and-field event secured San Beda's fourth straight overall juniors crown, and 13th overall. The victory allowed them to become the winningest juniors program with 13 general championships, just ahead of La Salle Greenhills' 12.

In third place in the juniors division was Letran (352.5), followed by Lyceum (278), EAC (271.5), La Salle Greenhills (244), San Sebastian (229), Perpetual Help (188), JRU (102.5), and Mapua (102).
