MANILA, Philippines – The University of the East (UE) is eyeing another championship double when the UAAP Season 79 fencing tournament opens Wednesday at the UST Quadricentennial Pavilion.

The Red Warriors ruled the men's and women's divisions for the fourth consecutive year in Season 78, and are once again fancied to rule the four-day event.

The most successful squad in the sport, UE finished Season 78 with four gold medals, three silvers, and two bronzes, beating University of Santo Tomas (2-0-2) and University of the Philippines (0-2-3) in the process.

Season 78 MVP Michael Nicanor is gone, but Nathaniel Perez – a former MVP himself – is still there to lead the way for the Warriors in his final UAAP season.

The Lady Warriors, meanwhile, will try to win their division for the 10th straight year.

Behind the efforts of season MVP Keren Pangilinan, the Lady Warriors collected five golds, one silver, and two bronzes last year, beating UST (1-2-2) and De La Salle University (0-2-4).

UE's high school teams also ruled the boys' and girls' tournament last year, and are looking to repeat their feat in Season 79.
