MANILA, Philippines – Seeing Rachel Ann Daquis' jersey raised to the rafters of Far Eastern University's (FEU) gym will serve as an inspiration to the Lady Tamaraws ahead of their campaign in the UAAP Season 79 women's volleyball tournament.

This, according to FEU's current star spiker, Bernadeth Pons.

FEU will formally retire Daquis' No. 3 jersey in a ceremony at the R. Papa Gym on Tuesday afternoon, where it will join those of basketball stars Johnny Abarrientos and Arwind Santos.

"Siyempre, sobrang proud ako kay Ate Chel," Pons told ABS-CBN News in a recent interview. "Alam ko naman talaga na ang laki ng na-contribute niya sa volleyball – hindi lang sa FEU, kun'di sa Philippines din."

"Sobrang proud ako sa kanya," she added.

Daquis played for FEU from 2004 to 2009, and helped the Lady Tamaraws win the UAAP Season 70 championship. A two-time UAAP Best Server, Daquis went on to have a celebrated career in semi-professional leagues as well, and was most recently a member of the RC Cola-Army team in the Philippine Superliga.

For Pons, the honor that will be given to Daquis will serve as a boost to the Lady Tamaraws, who are hoping to add to FEU's collection of women's championships this season.

"Hindi siya pressure," she said. "Inspiration siya para sa amin, kasi ayun nga, sobrang tagal na noong nag-champion sila doon."

"Ilang years na, hindi pa rin nagcha-champion ang FEU," she added. "'Yun 'yung magiging motivation ng bawat isa sa amin."

The Lady Tamaraws are among the contenders in Season 79, as they feature a nearly intact team bannered by Pons, Toni Rose Basas, and Remy Palma.

FEU opens its campaign against defending champion De La Salle University on Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
