The Miss Universe competition, like every beauty pageant big or small in scale, can bring out the armchair analyst in many Filipinos.

There are lessons to be learned, too, sure but people can be caught up in the minutiae (did the contestant wear her dress right, did she have nice hair, was her grammar correct) that the larger, more important picture is ignored.

Chris Ross, who plays point guard for San Miguel in the PBA, chose to get past the trivial details and wrote an insightful tweet as Monday’s pageant went on.

What people do with their body is their own business. Medically induced alterations work for some and don’t for others.

Still, in a society that hard-sells so-called beauty products, those who are comfortable in their own skin deserve applause.

Meanwhile, other PBA celebrities, both retired and current, appeared to have been hooked on the Miss Universe competition.

Former Barangay Ginebra player Erik Menk chimed in on guest performer Boyz II Men.

Jimmy Alapag gave the Grammy-winning R&B group a thumbs-up.

If Chris Newsome put his money where his tweet was, the Meralco playmaker would’ve been a bit disappointed.

Gilas Pilipinas head coach Chot Reyes was tweeting a blow-by-blow of the competition. He rooted for Miss Universe Haiti Raquel Pelissier, besides Miss Universe Philippines Maxine Medina.
