MANILA — The local government of Balayan, Batangas said it would not impose a lockdown after the detection of an mpox case in the town.

Balayan Mayor Emmanuel Fronda II confirmed that the country’s 14th case of mpox, a 12-year old boy, comes from their town.

“Wala pong granular lockdown – wala pong lockdown sa barangay, wala pong lockdown sa eskwelahan,” he said in the LGU’s social media page.

(There will be no granular lockdown – there will be no lockdown in the barangay and school.)

The local chief executive said the patient sought consultation from the Rural Health Unit last August 22 and was confirmed positive for the virus five days later by the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine.

The patient is recovering.

He said the patient’s “type 1” contacts have been asked to quarantine.

“‘Yun po ‘yung kapamilya, kasama sa bahay, ‘yun pong nahalikan, nayapusan, ‘yung kasamang matulog at ‘yung matagal na kasama sa iisang maliit na lugar,” he said.

(Those are the patient’s family, housemates, those that he kissed or had skin contact with, those he spent time with in an enclosed space.)

Despite the mpox virus not being airborne, Fronda appealed to his constituents to practice minimum health standards to protect themselves not just from mpox but from other pathogens.

“Kung saka-sakali pong kayo ay may maramdaman o sintomas kagaya nito na parang bulutong o sugat na nangyayari sa mga paa, halimaso, mag-report po kayo sa barangay. Maaari rin pong dumirekta sa Rural Health Unit,” he said.

(If in any case you feel any symptoms similar to chicken pox or lesions, you may report to the barangay or directly to the Rural Health Unit.)

The mayor urged the public to refrain from spreading rumors and unverified information that have no other purpose but to sow fear.

The local government said it would support the patient’s needs until he recovers.
