MANILA — The Department of Health on Thursday appealed to the public not to spread false information on mpox, as authorities continue to address a possible local transmission of the infectious disease.

DOH spokesperson Albert Domingo flagged a viral post last week that claimed that the Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center is treating another case of mpox.

“Makikita niyo sa page ng Amang Rodriguez Memorial Medical Center, noong nakaraang linggo may kumalat sa social media. Mpox daw, nakakatakot, negative. Hindi siya mpox so merong fake news,” Domingo said in a televised interview.

The health official advised the public to know the symptoms of the mpox virus, adding that not all pimple-like bumps are symptoms of the disease.

“Bago tayo magsabi na mpox, hindi lahat ng butlig ay mpox alamin natin bago tayo mag-anunsyo,” he said.

The health department said they are currently monitoring many suspected cases of mpox in hospitals, but explained that they would not make it public to prevent panic.

“Meron tayong laging suspect cases na nakukuha sa mga ospital pero hindi kami nag-aanunsyo ng bilang,” he said, adding that symptoms of mpox are similar to other illnesses such as chickenpox.

“Magkahawig sila, maraming sakit ang hindi mpox, kung lahat ng suspect case ay ia-announce, kakabahan ang mga tao nang hindi naman kinakailangan dahil hindi naman sila mahahawa.”

Meanwhile, Domingo said that current epidemiologic studies do not show any link or connection among any recent confirmed mpox cases, suggesting that there is already a local transmission of the disease.

"Patuloy ang ating epidemiologic studies tinitignan kasi natin ang mapa parang meron silang bilog-bilog; itong tao ba na ito ay konektado sa ganyan? At lahat ng contact tracing, pinagkakabit-kabit sila," he said.

"Wala pang nakikitang linkage, pagkakaugnay ang case 10, 11, 12, at pati yung pinaka-recent yung 13, di ba Metro Manila din siya wala silang kaugnayan, so mukhang mayroon talagang nangyayaring local transmission."

However, Domingo assured that the local cases are confirmed to be Clade 2, or the milder form of the disease, which has a significantly lower mortality rate than the deadlier Clade 1b variant.
