MANILA — The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) on Tuesday said another eruption of Mount Kanlaon is still a possibility despite its seemingly calm state today.

Mariton Bornas, chief science research specialist of Phivolcs, said Kanlaon was quietly degassing and producing weak low-frequency volcanic earthquakes as of Tuesday, but the volcano may suddenly behave violently without any precursor activity.

“Likely po ‘yong magkaroon pa tayo ng mga phreatic or similar explosive events kasi ganon po ‘yong ugali ng Kanlaon. More often than not, meron pong kasunod,” she said in a media briefing.

“It can happen anytime as long as meron po tayong unrest,” she added.

Mount Kanlaon in Negros island exploded for six minutes on Monday night, sending a plume of ash, rocks and gases five kilometers into the sky.

The state volcanology agency raised the alert level for the volcano from one to two on a scale of zero to five, warning more explosive eruptions were possible.

“Pag sinabing alert level 2, meron tayong unrest so hindi natin alam kung ito’y magtutuloy-tuloy. ‘Pag tumuloy, magkakaroon tayo ng explosive event kung hindi eh di we downgrade to alert level 1,” said Dra. Ma. Mylene Villegas, deputy director of Phivolcs. “Wala dapat tao within the four-kilometer danger zone.”

Bornas noted Kanlaon is a “dangerous” volcano. Its last magmatic eruption was 122 years ago, or in 1902.

“Marami po siyang lava flows na kung mage-erupt po siya nang effusive, marami po ‘yon; not only that, mahahaba,” Bornas said.

She added, “Once na nag-erupt po ang Kanlaon, ‘yong talagang magmatic, we may have lots of lava flows that are quiet long and will affect a lot of communities, especially po sa southern flung.”

As of Tuesday, the Phivolcs has yet to record a succeeding eruption in Mt. Kanlaon since Monday evening.
