MANILA — The Philippine Institute for Volcanology and Seismology is seeing three scenarios for Mt. Kanlaon in the coming days, following its “explosive eruption” Monday evening.

“We are looking at three scenarios: First scenario, if the monitoring parameters are sustained or maintained, phreatic and short-lived explosive eruptions like what happened yesterday may occur within the next few days. And if this happens, we will maintain the Alert Level 2 until such time na the monitoring parameters would significantly change,” Phivolcs Director Dr. Teresito Bacolcol said in a televised briefing.

A second scenario, according to Bacolcol, would be for the seismic ground information and volcanic gas parameters to worsen which could lead to a magmatic eruption.

“And if this happens, we will raise the alert level, from Alert Level 2 to Alert Level 3,” he said.

Bacolcol however noted that there has only been one magmatic eruption in the volcano’s history since 1866, which occurred in 1902.

“Karamihan ng eruption ng Kanlaon Volcano is phreatic eruption,” he said.

“Now, iyong third scenario natin, iyong mga monitoring parameters natin would decline, we will step down the alert level, from Alert Level 2 to Alert Level 1, after a sufficient observation has elapse.  So hindi kaagad natin iyan ibababa; titingnan pa natin, at least two weeks na sustained na pagbaba iyong parameters,” Bacolcol continued.

As of Tuesday, the Phivolcs has yet to record a succeeding eruption in Mt. Kanlaon since Monday evening.

“Sana hindi na ito maulit pa but we are still closely monitoring the activity of Kanlaon Volcano. And since 12 a.m. today to 12 noon kanina, ngayon lang, we recorded 43 volcanic earthquakes,” he said.

Phivolcs has also monitored the presence of sulfuric odor in Bago City, Bacolod, La Carlota City, La Castellana; and Kanlaon City.

“Mayroon ding ashfall na nai-report sa amin sa Bago City, some of the barangays in Bago City; some of the barangays in La Carlota City; two barangays in La Castellana; and three barangays in Canlaon City,” he said.
“So ngayon, wala na pong nai-report sa amin na sulphuric smell. After the eruption yesterday, umulan, so madali naman pong ma-dissipate iyong sulphur dioxide kapag uulan.”

Bacolcol also reminded residents living in the area not to enter the four kilometer danger zone.

“Huwag pong pumasok sa loob to minimize risks from sudden explosion like what happened yesterday; puwede ring magkaroon ng rockfall events and landslides,” he said. “And reminder din sa ating mga kababayan to wear face mask, protect themselves from volcanic ash and volcanic gases.”
