MANILA (UPDATED) — Rescue and relief operations will continue despite “an incident” involving a Philippine Air Force plane landing in Basco Airport in Batanes on Friday that has led to the closure of the airport until November 3, the Armed Forces of the Philippines said.

In a statement, the AFP said an Air Force C295 transport airplane carrying family food packs for distribution by the Office of Civil Defense "experienced a detached nose landing gear tire" as it landed at Basco Airport in Batanes on Friday afternoon.

It said that the PAF airplane completed its flight with no injuries to the pilots and crew and has been secured on the runway.

"The AFP assures the public of continued delivery of essential supplies to affected communities," Col. Francel Margareth Padilla, military spokesperson, said.

Padilla added the Air Force incident is being investigated and that "steps will be taken to ensure the safety and efficiency of future operations."

The Philippine Air Force made a similar statement on Friday, saying "despite this incident, our commitment and selfless duty to conduct rescue and relief operations in Batanes and all other typhoon-affected areas will continue by all other means.”

The Department of Social Welfare and Development said Friday that a Philippine Coast Guard Ship was bringing relief packs to Batanes, which is among the provinces affected by storms Kristine and Leon.

According to state media Philippine News Agency, the Airbus C295 with Tail No. 217 skidded off the runway on Friday afternoon after its landing reportedly detached on touchdown.

"Investigation is ongoing and nothing is conclusive as to the  cause of the incident," the PAF said in its statement.

The Civil Aviation Authority has closed Basco Airport to fixed-wing aircraft until November 3, PNA also reported.
