Typhoon Nika battered the northern Philippines on Monday as strong wind and heavy rain toppled trees and flooded roads.

Nika, with winds of up to 110 kph and gusts up to 185 kph, made landfall in the province of Aurora on Monday morning.

Nika was forecast to traverse Luzon island and exit the landmass west of Ilocos province late Monday according to the Philippines' weather bureau.

Around 20 storms strike the Philippines each year on average, bringing heavy rains, strong winds, and deadly landslides.
