Maria Tan, ABS-CBN News/FileMANILA -- Former President Rodrigo Duterte welcomes the candidacy of former cabinet secretary and former Civil Service Commission chairperson Karlo Nograles as mayor of Davao City in the 2025 Midterm Elections.

"I welcome his entry to the derby," Duterte told the media on Thursday.

Duterte and Nograles, the familiar names of political families, have filed their certificates of candidacy in the mayoral race.

The ex-president's son Paolo "Pulong" Duterte and Nograles' younger sister Margarita "Migs" Nograles will also face off in the congressional race of Davao City' first district.

"Alam mo dito sa Davao, kung sino lang ang gusto ng tao. Pag ayaw na ng tao sa akin, okay na, mag-retire na ako permanente. Pag natalo ako, ibig sabihin ayaw na ng taga-Davao sa akin," the former president said.

When asked what Davaoeños can expect if he is elected again as mayor of Davao City, Duterte stated that he will not return to the position.

"Wala na ako. Count me out. I am retired. Hindi na ako babalik," Duterte said.

"Ibigay ko na sa next generation. Kanila nang panahon to eh, nila Pulong, nila Inday. Hindi na ako makialam sa panahon na ito. Hindi ko na panahon. It's no longer my time," he added.

Duterte also said that he is retired, and stated that it is not necessary that Davao City is ran by the Dutertes.

His pronouncement comes despite filing his candidacy as Davao City mayor at the Commission on Elections.

"Whoever, leave it to God. Hindi kailangan Duterte ang mayor, it could not be that way. Kasi ang buhay, palad-palad. Kung nasa palad nila Inday yan, ni Pulong, if they stay there forever or just for one election and reelection, nasa palad na yan," he said.

Duterte said he is already grateful to God for giving him the opportunity to govern the city for many years. He mentioned that his family was originally from the Visayas and migrated to Davao in the 1950s.
