A cargo vessel ran aground in Sitio Noah, Barangay Calajoan, Minglanilla town in Cebu due to the strong winds brought about by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine.

Based on investigation by the Philippine Coastguard, the vessel, which came from Tawi-Tawi, was anchoring near the area after it could not proceed to its destination of Naga City due to baf weather.  inclement weather.

“It was dragged toward the shore due to rough seas and a rising tide,” said Ensign Abel Lomboy, spokesperson of PCG Central Visayas.

Both of its anchors also broke, leaving the vessel without holding power and vulnerable to the weather condition.

As of today, the vessel is 100 meters from the shoreline and continues to move closer due to the tide.

The coast guard is now conducting underwater hull inspections “to assess any possible hull breaches, while monitoring for any oil spill is ongoing with contingencies in place.”

The extraction of the vessel will be facilitated by a tugboat once inspection is done.

Meanwhile, the suspension of trips in Central Visayas is now partially lifted.

This covers the travel suspensions for vessels 250 Gross Tonnage and above, following the improvement in weather conditions.

However, trips under the jurisdiction of the Coast Guard Station Northern Cebu remains under full suspension due to ongoing adverse weather conditions.
