CEBU CITY — More than 5,000 passengers are stranded at ports across the country, the Philippine Ports Authority said Wednesday as sea trips were cancelled due to inclement weather brought by Tropical Storm Kristine.

Most of the stranded passengers — 2,345 — are in the Bicol region, where widespread flooding has affected provinces and where rescuers have been struggling to reach isolated towns and villages.

Another 2,109 are in ports in Eastern Leyte and in Samar, the PPA said.

In a separate tally, the Philippine Coast Guard in the Central Visayas said 490 passengers are stranded in ports across the region.

Ensign Abel Lomboy, spokesperson of the PCG Central Visayas, said that most of the passengers returned to their homes as bad weather hit the region on Tuesday night.

“We also issued a notice to mariners,” said Lomboy, referring to the official notice to suspend sea trips.

PCG-Central Visayas has also logged 66 vessels and 214 rolling cargoes stranded at ports with another 12 vessels and 23 motorbancas seeking shelter in port.

In Lapu-Lapu City, passengers who were to sail to Olango Island are staying at the Angasil Port.

“We provided them with food,” said Nagiel Bañacia, chief of the city’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.

Meanwhile in Pilar, Camotes, the PCG continues to search for a fisherman who was lost in strong waves.

Based on a report by the Pilar Municipal DRRMO, the fisherman was among three whose boat capsized while heading out from Merida, Leyte on Monday afternoon.

Two of the fishermen managed to swim to shore and are recuperating. They will be sent home when sailing resumes.
