MANILA - (UPDATE 2) Two Filipinos died while four others were injured in a car accident outside the Lucky Plaza shopping center in Orchard Road in Singapore Sunday, a Philippine official confirmed.

Minister and Consul General Adrian Candolada of the Philippine Embassy in Singapore confirmed the accident involved 6 overseas Filipinos.

Candolada said two Filipinos died, while four others remain in the hospital, two of which are in intensive care.

The Philippine official said what happened was a freak accident.

"Usually kasi very popular itong Lucky Plaza sa mga Pinay natin for their rest day. So it was a freak accident," he said, adding that police investigation on the incident is ongoing.

The police have also arrested the 64-year-old driver, Singapore media reported.

Channel News Asia said Lucky Plaza is known to be popular among Filipino domestic workers who gather there during their Sunday day off.

The Straits Times said the car crashed through a metal railing before landing on the side of the road next to the mall, hitting several people.

A video sent to ABS-CBN News by Berth Torres showed a crowd of women Filipinos gathering near the mall. Seconds later, a loud screech and then a crashing sound was heard.

The camera then panned to a damaged car on the side of a street with several people apparently injured, lying motionless around the vehicle.

Two pedestrians were unconscious when they were rushed to the hospital, but the victims later succumbed to their injuries, The Straits Times said quoting the police.

Singapore's Centre for Domestic Employees said it will get in touch with the employers and next-of-kin to find out the support they require, and was ready to render assistance, The Straits Times quoted the agency.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is checking the latest information about the accident with the embassy, and that assistance will be provided to the victims.
