Filipinos based in Alaska shared their horrific experience after a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck near Anchorage, causing widespread damage and triggering rock slides on Friday.

School teacher Thelma Desjarlais posted a live Facebook video when the quake struck just before 8.30 a.m. local time, when some people ran out in confusion.

She said her school was damaged and that there was a gas leak.

Ralph Ramos said he thought his roof would cave in because of the strong temblor. The quake caused cabinets in his house to fling open and several of his things to fall.

“It was scary. First thing I did, we were on the bed, I grabbed my daughter and we were running outside and jumping into our pick-up truck while my wife grabbed my son and made sure we were all safe,” Ramos said.

Bettina Beardsley said some bridges have collapsed and that roads were cracked and impassable.

“It was pretty scary. I was running in and out of the house. I didn’t know what to do. I saw my car shaking. So I went home, tried to secure my dog but I can’t find him. I don’t know how to express my fear,” Beardsley said.

There has been no report of casualties. The quake left 10,000 residents without power.

More than 25,000 Filipinos live in Alaska.
