LOS ANGELES - An Uber driver in California is facing kidnapping charges for refusing to allow 4 passengers out of his vehicle on Halloween night.

Khaled Ali, 35, pleaded not guilty to the charges on Monday, with his attorney saying he was not competent to stand trial.

Ali was arrested last Wednesday after leading police on a chase after several people called the emergency services a day before to report that he had taken them in the wrong direction after picking them up and had refused to allow them to exit his vehicle.

All of the victims managed to jump out of his car and alerted police.

Ali, who remains in jail in lieu of $475,000 bail, faces more than 23 years in prison if convicted.

The ride-sharing company Uber said it had removed Ali's access to the platform and was cooperating with authorities.
