A former cop convicted in the death of a Filipino police officer has been sentenced to eight years in prison in Guam.

Pinoy police officer Elbert Piolo was gunned down in July 2015, after a night of drinking with his former fellow police officer, Mark Torre Jr.

Reports say Piolo dropped off Torre at his home in Yigo. Piolo later called 911, saying: “I’m dying. He shot me.”

The defendant Torre argued that Piolo shot himself, though he claims he was too intoxicated to remember.

Meanwhile, Piolo’s family said he would have never killed himself.

Torre was convicted of negligent homicide. He was acquitted of murder and manslaughter earlier this year.

Following the sentencing, Torre’s attorney said they were “disappointed in the sentence handed down.”

A post on the ‘Justice for Sergeant Elbert Piolo’ Facebook page reportedly managed by the Piolo family expressed disappointment with the sentence, saying “eight years only… a cop killer gets away.”
