Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Nonato became the first Filipino ever appointed as commanding officer of the Royal Regiment of Canada, one of the nation’s oldest and largest army reserves.

On Sunday, Nonato assumed the role during the change of command parade at the Fort York Armoury in Toronto, Ontario.

The 44-year-old Nonato from Brampton, Ontario is the child of Filipino immigrants, and has served missions in Afghanistan and South Sudan.
