Philippines' honorary consul in Stockholm succumbs to COVID-19

(UPDATE) The Philippines' honorary consul in Stockholm, Sweden succumbed to the new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) on Saturday, the Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed.

Honorary Consul General Erik Belfrage, 74, died at the Sankt Goran Hospital where he was confined for less than two weeks, his wife Anna Belfrage told local news outfit Aftonbladet.

A businessman who had served as adviser of Peter Wallenberg and the Wallenberg family, Belfrage was appointed Honorary Consul General of the Philippines in Stockholm in 2013, among his assignments as a Swedish diplomat.

He was also chairman of the board of the Sigtuna School Foundation in Sweden from 1993 up to 2016.

“The DFA, with deep sadness, confirms the untimely demise of our Philippine Honorary Consul General in Stockholm Erik Belfrage at the age of 74, from complications arising from COVID-19,” the DFA said in a statement.

Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. also offered his condolences to Belfrage's family.

“Deeply saddened at losing Erik Belfrage PHL Honorary Consult General in Stockholm. He held the fort for us there when we cut out. PHL-Sweden relations thrived in his 7 year term. He helped many Filipinos. Sincere condolences to his wife Anna and family. He will be missed a lot,” Locsin said in a tweet.

According to the World Health Organization, Sweden has recorded 13,216 cases of the new coronavirus disease, as of April 18. The country's death toll stood at 1,400.
