MANILA -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) will reopen the investigation of the death of the slain retired police general and Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) board secretary Wesley Barayuga.

PNP Chief Police General Rommel Francisco Marbil said that this is in light of the new testimony that implicated several high-ranking officials in the 2019 murder of the former police official.

Police Lt. Col. Santie Mendoza bared during a House Quad Committee hearing on September 27 that he had been instructed by National Police Commission (NAPOLCOM) Commissioner Edilberto Leonardo and former PCSO General Manager Royina Garma orchestrated the murder.

Mendoza claimed that he was instructed to carry out the "operation" against Barayuga.

In his testimony, Mendoza said Garma allegedly provided intelligence for the operation, claiming it was related to a high-value individual involved in illegal drug activities.

In light of the revelations, Marbil stressed the need for a full investigation into the case.

“This revelation demands a thorough reinvestigation of the murder. No one is above the law, and we will seek justice for Ret. Gen. Wesley Barayuga and his family with the full resources of the PNP,” said Maarbil in a statement.

He tasked the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) to lead the probe.

“We are committed to uncovering the truth, regardless of the position or power of those involved. The public can rest assured that we will hold those responsible accountable," said the PNP chief.

The Barayuga murder has remained unsolved since 2019.
