MANILA — The Yang family business is “a massive crime syndicate,” Senate Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros said Monday as she hailed the arrest of Tony Yang — the elder brother of Michael Yang, who was the former Presidential Economic Adviser of President Rodrigo Duterte.

Tony Yang was arrested on September 19 after he was classified as an undesirable alien.

“The arrest of Tony Yang, who is wanted in China for financial scamming, will pave the way for establishing his connections to POGOs — just like his brothers Michael and Hongjiang,” Hontiveros said.

“It is much clearer now that their family business is a massive crime syndicate that has operated in the country for far too long and has victimized far too many.”

Hontiveros also suspects the Yangs are involved in Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators.

Former Duterte adviser Yang has denied that he is involved in POGOs, with his lawyer Raymond Fortun saying in July that “to say and make a sweeping statement of that nature may appear to not have any legal or factual basis.”

Yang, in a statement that Fortun read to the Senate then, also called the proceedings unfair.

"There is no respect for due process or rules of procedures that can be found in regular courts that would guarantee a person’s rights to be deemed innocent. Whether they admit it or not, the legislators are worse than learned prosecutors instead of fact-finding in aid of legislation," he said in his statement.

YANG BRO DEALT WITH GUO'S BAOFU LAND DEVELOPMENT INC

In a previous hearing, Hontiveros revealed that Hongjiang Yang has a joint account with Hongsheng incorporator Yu Zheng Can and supposedly had direct transactions with dismissed Mayor Alice Guo’s Baofu Land Development, Inc., the company that leased the property in Bamban, Tarlac to POGOs.

According to Hontiveros, Hongjiang is also an incorporator of the Philippine Fullwin Group of Companies whose corporate secretary is a certain Gerald Cruz.

Cruz is also reportedly a corporate secretary of Pharmally Biological, a company being linked to the Pharmally Pharmaceutical Corporation which is tagged in the anomalous purchase of COVID-19 medical supplies.

Michael Yang is the president of Fullwin and has shares in Pharmally Biological.

“Malabong nagkataon lang na pare-pareho ang ginagawa nitong magkakapatid na Yang (It is likely not a coincidence that the Yang brothers are doing the same thing). There are indications that corporate layering and the crimes they committed through these entities may be part of their modus operandi,” Hontiveros said.

Remarking on Cruz in July, Fortun said that “just because a person is connected with a company that somehow has a business dealing with another company under investigation does not make that person’s inclusion in that corporation as illegal.”
