MANILA — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr on Wednesday announced that fisherfolk can resume fishing activities weeks after recent oil spills off the coast of Bataan disrupted the livelihood of thousands in the province and in nearby areas.

“Nasabihan lang ako ni Secretary [Francisco Tiu] Laurel ng [Department of Agriculture] na mula ngayon ay maari nang mangisda, wala nang oil spill, pwede nang ituloy ang inyong hanapbuhay,” Marcos Jr said during the distribution of aid to affected fishers in General Trias, Cavite.

The president did not mention which areas in Manila Bay have been cleared for fishing, but, according to government data, over 25,000 families of fisherfolk in the province of Cavite alone have been affected by the recent oil spills which have caused over P250 million in economic losses.

With efforts to contain the oil underway, Marcos Jr said the government will now look into accountability for the oil spill. He also promised proper compensation for those affected by it.

“Masaya akong nababalita na matagumpay nating napigilan ang pagtagas ng langis mula sa mga barkong ito partikular ang Terranova para hindi na ito makapinsala sa kalikasan.”

The President said efforts are ongoing to siphon off industrial oil from the Terranova, which he says may take 10 more days.

Once the oil is siphoned out, salvors can start to try to refloat the Terranova and tow it away.

"Kung meron pang natirang langis baka doon kukunin. Kaya naging maayos naman ang ating pagtugon sa krisis na ito at marami ang tumulong sa atin.”

(If there some oil remains, they can recover it then. So we can say that the response to this crisis was good, and there were many who helped)

Meanwhile, authorities continue with efforts to seal off the manhole from another sunker tanker MT Jason Bradley in preparation for the refloating of the vessel, as well as in the siphoning of seawater from the MV Mirola 1.
