MANILA -- (7th UPDATE) -- Several local government units have suspended classes and work in government offices on Thursday, July 25, due to heavy rains and inclement weather brought about by the southwest monsoon or habagat.

The southwest monsoon is being enhanced by Typhoon Carina and is forecast to bring moderate to intense rains over various areas in Luzon until Thursday, state weather bureau PAGASA said.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Office of the Executive Secretary announced the suspension of classes in all levels and work in government offices in the following areas.

Suspension of work for private companies and offices is left to the discretion of respective companies.

The Senate also declared suspension of work for its employees. 

According to Atty. Renato Bantug Jr., Secretary of the Senate, Senate President Francis "Chiz" Escudero has declared the suspension of work on Thursday and Friday.

"[This is] to allow a thorough and unimpeded check and clean-up of Senate facilities and to allow employees who may have been affected by the heavy rains/flood to attend to their urgent concerns," he said. 

"Regular work shall resume on 29 July 2024 (Monday)." 

Senate employees who will be required to report for work on Thursday shall be entitled to overtime pay or compensatory time off, said Bantug. 

Work in the House of Representatives also remain suspended on Thursday, according to Secretary General Reginald S. Velasco.

"However, offices with essential functions shall ensure that all services shall remain unimpeded," Velasco said in a memorandum.
