MANILA — The heavy monsoon rains already causing widespread flooding in Metro Manila and many other areas in Luzon could persist until Thursday, state weather bureau PAGASA warned on Wednesday.

PAGASA weather specialist Veronica Torres said heavy to intense rains are still forecast to arrive on Thursday and the amount of rainfall could decrease by Friday.

"For tomorrow, inaasahan pa rin natin 'yung mga malalakas pa rin po na mga pag-ulan. Puwede pa nga rin po by tomorrow, puwedeng moderate, puwede ring umabot sa intense 'yung mga pag-ulan," Torres said.

"Pagdating ng Friday, doon natin inaasahan na [kakalma ang pag-ulan] although maulan pa rin naman, pero hindi kasing ulan ng Monday until Thursday po," she added.

On Thursday, Benguet and Abra residents could experience heavy to intense rains (100-200 mm) while Metro Manila, Cavite, Batanes, Babuyan Islands, the rest of Ilocos Region, Abra, Benguet, Zambales, Bataan, and Occidental Mindoro are still predicted to receive heavy rains (50-100 mm) still enough to cause flooding, according to PAGASA's weather advisory issued at 11 a.m.

By Friday, moderate to heavy rains (50-100 mm) are still possible over Zambales, Bataan, and Benguet.

Typhoon Carina intensified and pulled the southwest monsoon or habagat, which triggered flooding and sent thousands of residents to evacuation shelters.

Metro Manila on Wednesday declared a state of calamity due to the severe inundation unleashed by habagat.
