MANILA – Vice President Sara Duterte missed the opening of the Palarong Pambansa 2024 graced by President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. after she attended to sick athletes, an official said Wednesday.

"May nakuha kaming balita na mayroong mga athletes sa palarong pambansa na naospital for various cases," Education Undersecretary Michael Poa told reporters.

He said that the Vice President wanted to visit the sick athletes and give "moral support".

Duterte recently resigned from Marcos' Cabinet after tense relations between their families in recent months.

She will only head the Department of Education until July 19. Sen. Sonny Angara will replace Duterte as DepEd chief.

Duterte on Wednesday attended the National Learning Camp Appreciation Day in San Fernando, Cebu.

The event aims to recognize the groups and individual efforts and initiatives that improve students' learning and enhance teachers' competence.

Duterte said this is "part of our response to the low performance of our learners" in international assessments, which "underscored a pressing learning crisis that requires urgent action."

The ceremony in Cebu kicks off a three-week set of classes that will tackle reading and math for Grades 1 to 3.

The same classes, plus English, will be done from Grades 7 to 10.

Duterte did not grant any media interview after the event.

TRANSITION PHASE

Poa said DepEd personnel were coordinating with Angara's staff.

However, Duterte and Angara have not met formally.

"Ina-arrange pa po ni Senator Angara kung ano ang magandang schedule but definitely naman po magkakaroon ng pag-uusap parte naman yun ng transition," said Poa.

Duterte would spend her remaining days as DepEd chief leading events intended for the school break.

"'Yan naman po inaatendan naman ng lahat. Sa ngayon inaayos lang namin ang mga transition report," added Poa.

He added that they were looking forward to a "seamless" transition ahead of the July 29 opening of classes.

He also mentioned that the DepEd was reviewing the senior high curriculum.

"Siyempre po, we defer to the incoming secretary on these matters," he said.
