CEBU -- Vice President Sara Duterte did not show up to the opening ceremonies of the Palarong Pambansa 2024 in Cebu City on Tuesday.

On her behalf, Asec. Francis Bringas raised the Palarong Pambansa banner together with Philippine Sports Commissioner Chairman Richard Bachmann and Department of Interior and Local Government Region 7 Director Leocadio Trovela.

In a phone call with ABS-CBN News, DepEd spokesperson Usec. Michael Poa said that Vice President Duterte was visiting student-athletes who were experiencing dengue symptoms in the hospital.

Instead, the Vice President sent a message to the athletes.

"Kasabay ng pagbubukas ng Palarong Pambasa 2024 sa Cebu City ngayong araw ay ang aking dasal at hangarin para sa tagumpay ng ating mga layunin na maisulong ang akma, napapanahon, at dekalidad na edukasyon para sa mga kabataang Pilipino," her message read.

She also wrote that the Palarong Pambansa 2024 is the Department’s dedication for the students.

Duterte also thanked all teachers, coaches, technical staff, and all those part of the organization of the Palarong Pambansa.

Duterte made an appearance on Monday during the National Schools Press Conference, National Festival of Talents.

She was also present this morning at the National Learner’s Convergence.

It could be recalled that the Vice President confirmed her attendance to the Palarong Pambansa Opening Ceremonies last June 29 during the Pasidungog 2024.

"Yes, present ako sa Palarong Pambansa," she said.

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is also an invited guest to the ceremonies.

Over 18,000 athletes from 19 delegations are part of the Palarong Pambansa that will be played until July 16.
