MANILA — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Friday condemned the recent Houthi rebels' attack which targeted MV Tutor, a Greek-owned and Liberia-flagged freighter, while traversing the Red Sea.

The DFA said the attack took place last Wednesday, but it did not disclose how many Filipinos were on board.

“The Philippine government will take all necessary measures to secure the safety and well-being of the Filipino crew on board and ensure justice... We remain steadfast in ensuring the safety and welfare of all Filipino seafarers worldwide," the DFA said in a statement.

"We call on all UN member states to protect the human rights of seafarers," the DFA added.

APPEAL FOR HELP

Emerson Loria, a crew member of Tutor, appealed for help as he detailed how the alleged Houthi attack took place.

According to him, an unmanned boat with explosives hit their vessel, which was carrying coal to be sent to Israel. One of the seafarers stationed at the engine room was missing after the explosion.

Loria said there are around 22 Filipino seafarers on board the MV Tutor, including the captain.

"Sa mahal naming Pangulo ng Pilipinas, Pangulong Bongbong Marcos, sana ma-rescue na kami at sana mailigtas na po kami para mapanatag ang aming mga pamilya sa Pilipinas na naghihintay sa amin," one of the Filipino seafarers said.

Loria said the situation in the ship is worsening due to the lack of electricity and the surge of water inside the vessel.

"Nahihirapan na po kami dito, mainit, kulang sa pagkain, yung tubig limited na lang patinyung diesel, ginagamit na lang pang emergency sa generator, wala pa ring rescue, puro promises," an unnamed seafarer said.

After the MV Tutor incident, another vessel, MV Verbena, was attacked in the Gulf of Aden. However, the Philippine government has yet to confirm if there are Filipino crew on board.

The Houthis have been launching sea attacks over Israel’s war on Gaza. It continues to hold MV Galaxy Leader with 17 Filipino crew.
